Welcome to The Harris Charity
Aims and purpose
The Harris Charity can help young people under the age of 25 years who live in Lancashire (with priority given to those living in the Preston District.) The Trustees have wide powers of discretion to relieve need, hardship and distress, and to promote activities for social and community wellbeing.
The Harris Charity can make available grants to alleviate need, hardship or distress but it is not authorised to give money for rates, taxes or other public funds.
It can make grants for books, equipment or appropriate training and education where deprivation exists.
The Harris Charity can give funding for facilities and equipment for recreation or other leisure time occupations in the interests of social welfare.
History
The original Charity known as the Harris Orphanage Charity dates back to 1883. The current Harris Charity was established as a new charitable scheme in 1985 following the sale of the Harris Orphanage premises in Garstang Road, Preston to the Lancashire Polytechnic for use as Student Accommodation.
Donations
The Trustees consider this to be a well-founded and worthwhile local Charity and as such they welcome donations, covenants, legacies etc. to increase the effectiveness of the endowment.
